Identifying and naming trees within the school grounds.

Today we investigated what trees there are within our school grounds.

Using a Leaf idial we looked at the different characters of leaves and how they help us identify what tree they come from. We then explored the school grounds and found we could name a number of trees growing there, including within the hedges.

You can download your very own leaf identification dial, along with lots of other great activities, at http://www.naturedetectives.org.uk/ .

Observing and Recording the Weather

On the 3rd October, whilst we were still getting summer sunshine, we started learning about what different weathers we might see over the four seasons.

We explored what the weather might be like in Summer, Autumn, Winter or Spring and we created our own weather maps. We learnt about all the different symbols used by meteorologists and even had a go presenting our own weather forecast using this website: http://www.bluesquarething.co.uk/geography/dragdropmap/ukweathermap.html

We were also very lucky to meet weather presenter Clare Nassir who read us her new book Colin the Cloud. Through this we learnt about different cloud types and how they travel around the world.

The children loved hearing the story about Colin which also taught them about different types of clouds.

Over the next few months we will be setting up our own weather station then observing and recording the weather using simple equipment.

Welcome

Welcome to the KS1 science blog.

This blog will take you on our science journey as we study the natural world around our school.

Over the coming year we will be exploring changes in nature throughout the seasons observing closely the plants, wildlife  and habitats around us.

The natural curiosity of the children in KS1 will drive the learning and I am very excited about this. I already have a huge number of questions from the children which need answering. You can see these at http://padlet.com/anna_lingard1/sciencequestion.

I hope you enjoy our blog.
